A spectacular natural setting in the heart of a 26,000-acre area in the Shawangunk Mountains makes the Mohonk Mountain House one of the most popular resorts in the United States. Another popular summer activity is our lake swim, where guests can enjoy a supervised swim across the glacial mountain lake offered at certain times in the day. In July and August there are teen programs that feature supervised activities such as daylong hikes, golf or tennis. There are also summer evening programs for kids -- ice cream sundae socials, dance parties, campfires and the like. ✅ Be prepared for your luggage to be whisked away by guest services, as well as your car while you’re checking in, which is an amenity included in your overnight rate. The parking lots are not too far away but there are a number of steps to climb back up to the hotel.
You can be rubbed with Shawangunk grit, inhale the particular kind of "mountain red" witch hazel that grows on the property, or sink into one of over a dozen other treatments. There's a wooded playground for toddlers and younger kids, and a jogging strollers are available so that parents can explore the grounds with babies. In summer the lake is a center of activity in summer, with a swimming beach, boating and fishing. Mohonk occasionally gets comparisons to the haunted Overlook Hotel in The Shining. Perhaps it’s the Victorian feel or scale of the place or expansive hallways or its topiary maze. The only “ghost” here is likely the spirit of Albert Smiley, who probably would be quite pleased with the way the place has evolved — and the ways in which it has not.

On it they built two winter homes and a landscaped arboretum called Canyon Crest Park, which they opened to the public free of charge. Its beauty made it a nationally known tourist destination, but the park closed in 1939, a victim of the Depression. It was there that the Smileys acquired a 220-acre hilltop property (now known as Smiley Heights), with views of Redlands and the San Bernardino Mountains. We climbed into some of the 120 little wooden gazebos scattered around the property, so evocative of the Victorian era and the Mountain House. These structures, when illuminated at dusk, turn the property into a fairyland and have been part of Mohonk from the beginning.

Between the soaring mountain vistas and the never-ending list of activities, Mohonk provides an unforgettable—and perhaps even lifechanging—experience. The gardens at Mohonk are of course seasonal, but I enjoyed walking through and using my imagination in November. It’s inspiring to stay in a place that has played a role in world history. Since I visited in November, there were some things that I didn’t get to experience. I love history, so I was enthralled by all of the ornate woodwork, fireplaces, and nooks and crannies filled with comfortable Victorian furniture. New Paltz, the closest town, is approximately 85 miles north of New York City, making it a convenient and scenic escape from the city.
